SAP Program
What Is SAP?
The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a school-based support program at Forest Hills Elementary School. The SAP team is made up of professionally trained school staff and Cambria County agency personnel. The purpose of SAP is to identify and assist students who may be experiencing barriers to learning.
The SAP team works collaboratively with parents/guardians to help connect students with appropriate supports within the school and, when necessary, with community resources. SAP does not diagnose, treat, or refer students for treatment. Instead, the team provides families with information and guidance so they can make informed decisions that best meet their child’s needs.
What Behaviors May Be Barriers to Learning?
Some behaviors or changes that may interfere with a student’s success include:
-
Withdrawing from family, friends, or activities
-
Changing peer groups
-
Lack of motivation or apathy
-
Refusing to attend school
-
Unexplained physical injuries
-
Feeling sad or lacking a sense of belonging
-
Talking about depression or suicide
-
Defying authority at home or school
-
Acting aggressively
-
Hitting, kicking, or biting
-

How Can My Child Become Part of SAP?
Anyone can refer a student to the SAP team, including:
-
Teachers or school staff
-
Parents or guardians
-
Family members or friends
-
The student themselves
Once a referral is made, the SAP team gathers information to better understand how the student is doing in school. The SAP process will not move forward without written parent/guardian permission. After permission is received, the SAP team works collaboratively with the family to develop a plan to support the student’s success. Participation in SAP is voluntary.
What Happens After a Referral Is Made?
-
A SAP team member will contact the parent/guardian to discuss the referral.
-
Written permission is required before a SAP team member meets with the student.
-
The SAP team works closely with the parent/guardian and student throughout the process.
-
Parent/guardian input and involvement are essential in developing an effective plan of action.
How Do I Contact the SAP Team?
